Effective Telemarketing Practices

Telemarketing is one aspect of the call center that you cannot let wither away and die. I say that because that’s where telemarketing services are headed. There are dozens of restrictions against call centers that make lead generation calls to prospective customers. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and other such bodies have taken every step possible to strangle this sector. BPO units are being fined in millions to set examples for the others. The question of an individual’s privacy is driving the telecom authorities to almost obliterate a sector that provides employment and livelihood to millions of people across the world. The business process outsourcing sector has to think of something that will revive this problem. Let’s find out some ways in which this issue can be tackled.

The BP “Clean Up” Telemarketing Scam

One of the latest telemarketing scams comes in the wake, so to speak, of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Scam artists are busy trying to impress people with hot stock tips concerning companies with new clean-up technologies.

This particular telemarketing scam is just the latest variation in the well-worn “pump and dump” stock scam. The way it works is that scammers tout the promise of some lightly traded public company that they allege has amazing new clean-up technologies in the works. And they tell victims that they, too can get in early and make tons of money off this pink sheet stock that’s priced at pennies per share.

Proposal seeks to restrict text messages from telemarketers

State Rep. Seth Grove figures text messaging is the next platform telemarketers will use to advertise products and services.

So Grove, R-Dover Township, introduced legislation last month that would prohibit telemarketers from contacting someone’s cell phone via text message if the person has signed up on the state “Do Not Call List.”

“I’m trying to cut it off before it ever starts up,” he said. “I view it as kind of the next step of ways for telemarketers to put their product out there.”

Companies would face a penalty of up to $1,000 for each violation under his proposal.

Fees Telemarketers Pay to Access the National Do Not Call Registry Will Not Increase in FY 2011

The fees that telemarketers pay to access phone numbers on the National Do Not Call Registry will remain unchanged in fiscal year 2011, the Federal Trade Commission has announced. All telemarketers making calls to consumers in the United States are required to download the Do Not Call list to make sure consumers who have placed their numbers on the list do not receive unwanted calls. (See related press release dated August 18, 2009, at http://www.ftc.gov/opa/2009/08/donotcall.shtm.)

The access fees for fiscal year 2011 (from October 1, 2010 to September 30, 2011) are based on the Do-Not-Call Registry Fee Extension Act of 2007 and will be the same as they were in fiscal year 2010: Telemarketers can get the first five area codes for free, and will pay $55 for a subscription giving them access to Registry phone numbers in additional area codes, up to a maximum charge of $15,058 for all area codes nationwide. Telemarketers who subscribe to additional phone numbers during the second half of their annual subscription period will be charged $27 per area code. Organizations that are exempt from the Do Not Call rules, such as some charitable organizations, can get the entire list for free.
