HP’s WebOS Purge Continues with Sacking of 275 Staffers

Hewlett-Packard’s whittling down of its webOS portfolio continued Tuesday with the firing of 275 of the remaining 600 employees working in the business unit acquired with its $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in April 2010.

HP let go more than 500 webOS employees last September in the aftermath of its decision to shut down its TouchPad tablet and future webOS-based consumer hardware products. Former Palm chief executive Jon Rubenstein, who been serving as senior vice president of HP’s PC business since the acquisition, left the company in late January.

School district drops plan to research outsourcing custodial services

After getting hundreds of negative calls and emails, Bullitt County Public Schools has dropped a plan to research whether outsourcing custodial services would save the district money.

But the district’s decision didn’t stop a crowd from attending the Feb. 22 board meeting to oppose the idea, even though the proposal had been removed from the agenda a couple of days earlier.

Serco profits driven on by Asian outsourcing

Serco said on Tuesday that the rush to outsource by governments around the world had led to £30bn of opportunities this year, with more than a quarter in fast-growing Asian and Australasian markets.

The UK-based group, which runs services as wide-ranging as the Barclays Cycle hire scheme in Britain to detention centres in Australia, said it had secured £17.9bn of orders at the end of last year compared with £16.6bn at 31 December 2010.

Outsourcing works OK for a small representative office, though I haven’t heard of any projects in Russia for companies with several thousand employees,” the finance director of a big international holding told me. His company recently acquired several plants in Russia with a total employee headcount of about 7,000 employees. Here is a perception that is widespread in Russia: Outsourcing is good only for small international startups where there is not always a sufficient workload for a full-time accountant and, besides, the head office would use the third-party accounting provider to minimize its risks. Regretfully, the actual positive big number of cases are not well-known on the market.

IBM Layoffs Exceed 800, Workers Say

IBM has laid off more than 800 workers at locations across the U.S. in the past 24 hours, according to company sources and documents obtained by InformationWeek. Many of the cuts appear to target the company’s Global Technology Services outsourcing group.

Etisalat terminates Tech Mahindra outsourcing deal

Tech Mahindra is awaiting “official communication” from Etisalat, the company said, after a media report that the carrier has cancelled its outsourcing contract with the Indian provider as it shuts down its India network, Money Control reveals.

StarTek, Inc. SRT -0.97% , a leading provider of business process outsourcing services, today announced that it has signed an agreement with Wells Fargo Bank, N.A. for a three-year $20 million secured revolving credit facility. The amount the Company may borrow under the revolving credit facility is subject to a borrowing base calculation, and has an initial availability of $10 million, with the flexibility to borrow up to $20 million at the Company’s option. The facility will replace the Company’s $7.5 million secured line of credit with UMB Bank, which was to expire in August 2012. The interest rate on borrowings will decrease from LIBOR plus 3.75% to LIBOR plus 2.50%-3.00% under the new agreement.

On 12 January, Charity Business, an outsourcing company offering financial services to charities, sent an email to its estimated 200 clients saying that it was closing with immediate effect.
