Data storage demands continue to increase and the data centre industry is having to respond to ever-growing requirements, according to new research.

A survey carried out by Sentrum, a data centre solutions specialist, has shown that the usage of data centres has fluctuated in the last few years but still remains high. Seventy-five per cent of respondents say that their business had at least a portion of their data outsourced in 2011.

The difficultly in organising data management in-house and the increasing costs of storing vast amounts of information is causing many businesses to look towards data centres.

The future does look bright, however, with 18 per cent declaring their intention to outsource soon rather than invest in the infrastructure in-house.

Power usage is one issue for businesses, driving them to outsource. The government requires companies to reduce their carbon output and power-hungry data servers can push up those levels. Through outsourcing there is no need to worry about the carbon contribution made by data servers.

The trend is unsurprising when considered alongside the growth of cloud computing. Companies are reducing what is actually physically in their office, in terms of data and software. This has many benefits for security, cost-cutting and efficiency.
