Why are ‘progressives’ opposed to outsourcing?

Much has been made of the Obama campaign’s new slogan: “Forward.” Some commentators have noted its similarity to “Lean forward,” the slogan of FOB (friend-of-Obama) cable network MSNBC. Jim Hoft of Gateway Pundit found a historical antecedent for the slogan in a Hitler youth marching tune.

But much as the president and his liberal followers claim to be people of vision who embrace the future—a notion that was also implicit in the Obama campaign’s 2008 slogan “Hope and Change”—in at least one area, so-called progressives are anything but forward-looking. That area is outsourcing.

Outsourcing our secretarial jobs makes no sense at all

I have been employed as a medical secretary by the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust for almost 20 years and I have to say the management are currently treating everyone, including nursing staff – but mainly admin staff – as disposable equipment that they can just toss aside whenever the whim takes them.

A few departments already have some of their letters outsourced to a British company who pay people a set amount per line to type the letters at home.

The Changing Dynamic of the Outsourcing Relationship

Even though business process outsourcing (BPO) continues to grow at a steady clip, with most analysts projecting continued low double-digit growth, some outsourcing initiatives have been unable to garner the necessary support and momentum because of prior, painful outsourcing experiences of CFOs and other key executives. In many such cases, those involved in past outsourcing failures have been reluctant to engage providers again because of the lingering memories (and sometimes constant reminders) of the business interruptions and cost variances.

80 percent of the public do not believe outsourcing helps the British economy

Research commissioned by the National Outsourcing Association (NOA) has revealed that 80 percent of the UK general public do not believe that outsourcing contributes to the economy.

This perception has stemmed from the connotations of outsourcing with cost cutting (67 percent), job losses (53 percent) and offshoring to India (45 percent). Commonly cited examples of outsourcing by the public included a major bank opening a call centre in India and a sports brand setting up a factory in China to manufacture trainers, despite the fact neither involve outsourcing, instead being examples of captive offshoring projects.

Pacifica considers outsourcing police

As Pacifica searches for ways to resolve its $700,000 annual budget deficit, one option, closing the city’s police department and outsourcing that work to the county sheriff, is causing both concern and interest among residents and officials.

When Pacifica’s Financing City Services Task Force floated the idea in December, it was one of several submitted for consideration. Others include a $118 per year parcel tax, a half-cent sales tax increase, or cuts to funding for after-school programs and the Pacifica Resource Center, which provides social services and nutritional assistance to seniors, children and low-income residents.
